In an industry where you’re judged mainly on perception, it’s imperative to make sure you’re always doing enough to be perceived in the best way. So this month we’re talking you through the importance of branding, marketing and advertising. Not for your product or company but for yourself. Having the ability to build yourself as a walking brand is one of the most important skills to have in 2020.
We’ve come up with 5 tips on how to make sure you’re marketing yourself in the right way.
Social Media – It’s one of the most palpable ways in which you can give yourself exposure to recruiters and potential employers. Whether you want to be a television presenter, a fashion designer, a writer, DJ or a media planner, it goes without saying that social media is the way forward. Ask yourself, who am I? And what do I want this page to say about me?
When thinking of what direction to take, consider potential employers; It’s a known fact that recruiters Google your name minutes after reading your CV, so making sure your profiles are up to scratch is crucial. Ensure there are more examples of your work and creativity than there are selfies and always interact with organisations you’d like to be a part of. Use social media to your advantage. Network, discover, discuss and always remember potential employers could be looking at everything you post.
Get the right look – As shallow as it may sound, the way you look in the creative and media industries goes a very long way. Now we’re not saying you have to be a supermodel to land a role but it does help to create a signature look that makes you stand out from the crowd. Especially, if you’re interested in any front of camera work.
Think of a staple accessory or style you feel comfortable with and make it your own. Whatever it is, if it gets you noticed, it will work to your advantage – just make sure you’re staying true to you and are remembered for the right reasons.
Network – How does networking market you? It’s simply the best way to sell yourself. Go to as many events in your chosen field of work, and build your contacts book. Networking is crucial at any point in your career, the bigger your contacts book the better. Remember people just starting out are as important as those more established professionals. The tables turn quickly and the intern you once worked alongside could have the potential to be your next boss.
Attitude – Attitude is everything. As Maya Angelou put it: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Attitude goes a long way in this industry and you’ll be surprised at how small the industry is and how much word of mouth is a powerful tool. People talk and you don’t want to be remembered for being rude, obnoxious or hostile to work with. No matter what’s going on in your personal life, don’t allow it to reflect in your working day. Always be positive, pleasant and polite.
Flaunt It – If you have it flaunt it, and no we’re not talking about your peach derriere! Talent, skills, projects, connections, brag about them, write about them, blog about them. Get in contact with other creatives and potential employers and offer them a helping hand. This will give you a chance to showcase your skills by offering your help and support.
