How to take charge of your future

It’s been a crazy two weeks here in Chicago. I feel like I have been constantly running on several different treadmills at once. While it seems like that is a comical and nearly impossible picture – that is what it feels like! I graduated university a few months ago and entered the media and fashion working landscape. I thought I’ve known who I was for a long time… I was wrong.

As it turns out, I believe we go through several different ‘puberties’ in our lives. As we transition from one major stage to another – we change! Getting a hold of who you are in a new phase of life and what you want can be extremely confusing. It’s felt that way for me recently. Not knowing who I was or what I want? Terrifying!

But, don’t lose hope. You’re still you. There are several ways to figure out your next few steps in life and reorganize where you want to be. Read on if you want to learn about how I have taken back control of my life and future, after a few weeks of feeling completely out of control.

Push yourself to dream a little more.
My biggest problem this week wasn’t figuring out the steps to get me where I wanted to go. I didn’t even know where I wanted to go!

Do this exercise in the morning or before you go to bed (whenever you’re more alert. For me, it’s definitely before bedtime). Lie in bed and imagine waking up on your perfect day in the future. What’s on the bedside table? A book you’re reading? A magazine you helped published? What’s peeking in through the curtains – a skyline of your favorite city you want to be in? Picture every intimate detail. What do you wear, what do you drive, where do you go to work?

The more detailed that you can get with this daydream – the better! It will help you visualize exactly where you want to be.

Make a map of where you want to be.
A literal map. Maybe not a geographical map – but grab a pen and a piece of paper and start day dreaming. I’m very practical, so it’s hard for me to let my mind wander without restrictions. Where do you want to be in 5 years? 10 years?

Make a note of where that place is in the future. Now make a map of all of the steps it will take to get you there! Don’t be intimidated if it’s a lot of steps… mine sure was!

After you’ve made a map – stay inspired!
This may seem corny (and you’ve probably been told this before), but a ‘dream board’ is a very real motivational tactic. I don’t have a physical bulletin board of my dreams and goals, but I have some friends who do – and they’ve had great success ticking off each step! For me, I prefer the digital route. Maybe make a secret Pinterest board and pin images of that perfect day you imagined.

Whatever you’re doing this week, or wherever you are in your career… if you’re feeling lost, don’t feel like you’ve lost yourself! Dream about your future, map it out, and create a board of inspiration to keep yourself to it. You’ll be back on track in no time.
